Neonatal Acne

Neonatal acne is acne that occurs to newborns. This type of acne is pretty common, occurring in about 20% of newborns. Small, red bumps and pustules occur on babies suffering from neonatal acne. It usually strikes within 2-3 weeks of the baby's life. It appears on the cheeks, forehead, eyelids, chin, neck, and upper chest.

Neonatal acne is difficult to diagnose because many types of skin conditions might occur during the neonatal phase. There is a lot of controversy surrounding neonatal acne because its true nature is unknown. Some hold that its not acne but a skin condition that looks like acne.

Neonatal acne normally resolves on its own. If treatment is given, it's in the form of antifungal creams with a variation of creams typically used in the treatment of acne. Sometimes oral medications are used.
