Acne Cosmetica

Acne cosmetica is caused by pore-clogging oils, such as makeup. Makeup and other pore-clogging oils and powders can lead to blackheads and other flat acne. These oils, such as mineral oil, are thick and they cause cells of the follicles to stick to each other more easily. This forms into plugs which leads into the formation of acne.

Powder based cosmetic is less acnegenic the liquid based cosmetics. Powder based products help extract excessive oil of the face. Liquid based products that are silicone based are less acnegenic. Products that contain D&C red dye are highly comedogenic (induces bumps to form) and should be avoided.

If your skin is acne prone, you should use oil-free products. However, oil-free does not always means what it says. When a product claims its oil free, it usually means that it does not contain ingredients which make the face oily and not that it contains oily ingredients. Some oily ingredients are used in oil-free products but these ingredients don’t give the face problems. Other ingredients that are not oils are included in oil-free products and are comedogenic.
