Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid help to 'prevent acne outbreaks by removing dead skin cells and excess surface layers oils from the skin, while discouraging bacterial growth.' 1 Benzoyl peroxide is offered in concentrations of 1% to 10%. It more effective when offered in gel form. It is often offered in combination with oral or topical antibiotics because it is more effective than when used by itself. However, benzoyl peroxide can make the face irritant and can also bleach clothing.
Another compound that's found in over the counter treatments is silver oxide (silver and oxygen). Silver is a natural and very effective anti-bacterial. Bacteria have a difficult time building resistance to silver. Oxygen helps damaged skin heal rapidly.
