Hormonal Therapy for Acne

Women who have hormonal imbalance can use hormonal treatments for acne. Women who have hormone imbalance tend to have unwanted hair growth or irregular menstrual cycles. A woman may go on hormonal therapy after being evaluated by an endocrinologist. In hormonal therapy, antiandrogens or agents that block androgen production can be used:
antiandrogens
= cyproterone acetate
= chlomadinone acetate
= spironolactone
= drospirenone
= desogestrel
= flutamide
agents that block androgen production
= estrogens
= oral contraceptives
= cyproterone acetate
= gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists
= low-dose glucocorticoids

Hormonal therapy reduces the production of sebum. Sebum, however, is only one factor for the cause of acne. Thus, other methods of fighting acne, topical treatments or antibiotics, should not be discontinued.
